New signage is about to be installed throughout Torquay to make it easier for people to navigate their way around the township.
From late May, a series of 60 signs will be placed around the town to help identify key destinations such as beaches, parks and shopping precincts, and to highlight walking and cycling routes between these locations.
The new signage promotes accessibility and active transport, with easy to follow, helpful information such as distances between locations, aimed at encouraging more locals and visitors to walk and ride.
"Currently there is a lack of wayfinding signage in an overall cluttered signage landscape across Torquay, which we want to clean up and simplify so that it's accessible for all," Cr Liz Pattison said.
"The new signs will be strategically positioned around the town and mounted on timber posts, designed to stay in tune with the natural environment."
"The signage will make it easier for people to find their way to places like the beach, Surf City Precinct and other shopping areas."
"Torquay is a great place to make your way around on foot or bike, so the signs will point out walking and cycling paths and how close it is between destinations. We really want to inspire more people to opt for active transport over car trips where they can."
As part of the project, a number of outdated signs will be removed throughout Torquay.
The installation of the signage follows a community engagement period on the Torquay Wayfinding Signage Strategy and Design Guidelines, which were endorsed by Council in April 2024.
The project is jointly funded by Surf Coast Shire Council and the Victorian Government's Growing Suburbs Fund.
The new signage style will be used to replace and install new signage in Torquay and other townships over time.
