Skateboarders of all ages and abilities will soon be able to kick flip their way around a great new skate park in Sydney Park.
Over 2,000 skaters living in the City area and 55,000 within a 20 kilometres of Sydney Park, Alexandria, will enjoy the new space with a skate plaza, beginner bowl and large flow bowl for skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes.
And the upgrade will also see new picnic and shaded areas for the public to enjoy the popular park.
Features of the new skate space include:
- a traditional skate park zone suitable for all skill levels and disciplines
- a plaza zone featuring low level obstacles for street style technical tricks
- a beginner's bowl for new skaters to practise
- a flow bowl with varied depth from 1.5 to 3 metres for intermediate and advanced skaters.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the new space marks another step in the transformation of Sydney Park from an industrial park and brick works in 1893.
"We're very proud of our award-winning park which is enjoyed by thousands of local residents and visitors to our city," the Lord Mayor said.
"We have a large skating community in our city so it's vital we provide the spaces for them to play and practise.
"This new skate park will have a variety of obstacles for riders of all levels and I look forward to it become a well-used community space.
"As our population of young people grows, we're working to ensure there are safe and fun recreational activities for everyone."
The skate park will cater for all levels and styles and will be accessible to people using wheelchairs, bikes and scooters. It will be easily accessible from St Peters train station, bus services and existing car park facilities.
A new path adjacent to the new skate park will complete the east connection of the larger circuit throughout the park.
The City currently manages four skate parks:
- Redfern Park – a small skate plaza with basketball courts near the sports field
- Waterloo Oval – an extensive skate plaza featuring ramps and street skate elements near the sports oval
- Ward Park in Surry Hills – a small concrete skate bowl located within the children's playground
- Federal Park in Annandale – a small steel skate ramp (half-pipe) off Chapman Road near the wetlands.
Construction of the new skate space has commenced and is due to be completed mid-next year.
