New Social Media Minimum Age Rules

The new rules set out which online services will be excluded from the social media restrictions for young people under 16 years.

The social media minimum age obligation will come into effect on 10 December 2025.

Online services that will be excluded from the minimum age include messaging, voice and video calling, and online gaming.

Also excluded are services with the primary or main purpose of enabling professional development, education, and health support.

The excluded platforms have been chosen on the basis that they pose fewer of the harms associated with social media use to those under 16 years, or are regulated under different laws.

From 10 December, under 16s can no longer have accounts on services that meet the definition of 'age-restricted social media platform' in the Act, including:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Snapchat
  • TikTok
  • X
  • Reddit
  • YouTube
