New standard to improve care for patients with cataracts

Australian Medical Association

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released a new national standard to define clear pathways of care so that decisions about cataract surgery are consistent and equitable.

The standard aims to ensure that cataract patients are prioritised for surgery or non-surgical alternatives based on both clinical need and individual circumstances.

The Cataract Clinical Care Standard was developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, in consultation with consumers and healthcare professionals.

The new standard is available in the AMA GP Desktop toolkit, or can be downloaded here.
