Michael Ferguson, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

A new $1.5 million floating pontoon has been officially opened at the Port of Stanley, providing much-needed berthing for up to four vessels in the scenic seaside town.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Michael Ferguson, congratulated TasPorts for funding the facility, which will benefits both locals and visitors.

"This is a much-needed berthing facility that will improve the safety and amenity of the historic Port of Stanley,'' Minister Ferguson said.

"It will also improve access for emergency services in the event of a maritime safety event.

"Thanks to TasPorts for building this modern facility and I also congratulate Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST) for its design and planning as well as local Tasmanian businesses BridgePro, Bellingham Marine and Tasmanian Marine Construction for their excellent work.

"The facility consists of an access gangway leading to a combination of pontoons, supported by steel piles designed to accommodate vessels up to 15 metres and 15 tonnes displacement.

"The new pontoon will be a great asset for the town of Stanley and the Circular Head region, allowing up to four visiting vessels to berth and encouraging visiting boaters to spend more of their time and money in the town.

"To support the safety and security of pontoon users, the floating pontoon is augmented by two new light towers and a new security camera.

"The construction of the floating pontoon required the remediation of about 50 metres of sheet pile wall in Fishermans Dock."
