City of Ballarat residents are encouraged to stay active, independent and connected by exploring the wide range of transport options available across the municipality.
The Ballarat Transport Guide for Older Adults outlines the many ways residents and visitors can move around the city with confidence, including public transport, walking and cycling infrastructure, and a variety of rideshare services.
The guide also highlights local community groups and service providers who offer transport support to help people stay engaged with the community.
City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Tracey Hargreaves, joined community members at the Ballarat Train Station recently to promote the guide.
"We know that staying connected to community, services and social activities plays an important role in supporting people's health and wellbeing," she said.
"The Ballarat Transport Guide for Older Adults is designed to empower people to move around our city independently and with confidence.
"There are many supports available to older community members, including discounted myki passes, accessibility assistance on public transport, and funding programs for eligible community members. The guide brings all this information together in a clear and easy‑to‑understand format for residents, carers and families."
The Transport Guide for Older Adults complements Council's ongoing Ageing Well programs that aim to build capacity, provide education and connect Ballarat's older residents to social opportunities and support services.
The City of Ballarat recently delivered a three‑part transport education program for older adults called Wiser Walker, Wiser Traveller in partnership with RoadSafe Central Highlands. Participants learned how to plan trips, access public transport safely, access myki concessions, and explore their transport options.
Hard copies of the Ballarat Transport Guide for Older Adults can be accessed at Ballarat Libraries, Customer Service at the Phoenix Building and the Vickers Street, Lucas and Djila-tjarriu Community Hubs.
