New Vision for Hurstville Civic Precinct

Georges River Council

Georges River Council has commenced public consultation for the Hurstville Civic Precinct Planning Proposal. The Planning Proposal will support the vision to activate the heart of Hurstville with new contemporary community facilities, expanded civic functions, inviting public open spaces and parking.

The land covered by the proposal includes the area bound by MacMahon Street, Park Road, Queens Road and Dora Street; it is the block that includes the Hurstville Entertainment Centre, Georges River Council chambers and offices, MacMahon Street carpark and the Hurstville Museum & Gallery.

The Planning Proposal will deliver many community benefits, including new community facilities, parking, new venues and spaces for recreation, relaxation, study, dining, and parking. The Hurstville Museum & Gallery is planned to be preserved and will continue to foster creativity, celebrate local history and identity, and support lifelong learning.

The Proposal provides a unique opportunity to deliver community benefits and a mix of other uses including commercial, offices, retail and residential. The ambition is to deliver a range of facilities for the community that reinforces Hurstville as a vibrant place to live, work and shop in southern Sydney's most energetic Strategic Centre.

The Civic Precinct Planning Proposal has been informed by comprehensive community consultation in 2015. A number of studies of the potential impacts of the proposed development have also been undertaken and the recommendations of these studies have informed the proposed planning controls.

Georges River Council Mayor Nick Katris said, "I am encouraging our community to take part in this important consultation to help shape the future of the Civic Precinct. Council's ambitions are to make the heart of Hurstville a vibrant hub that meets people's living needs in the 21st Century.

"To ensure the community benefits are delivered, the Proposal requires at least 50% of the site area to be public open space. At least 25% of the floor area of the buildings on the site will also need to be for community uses and facilities and residential land use will be capped at 55% of the floor area."

Have Your Say

Community consultation opened on Wednesday 18 January 2023 to inform the community about the Planning Proposal and accompanying amendment to the development control plan. The community are invited to have their say until Friday 17 February 2023.
