New warning signage has been installed on the approach to Bugong Road in Budgong following increased truck and heavy vehicle traffic.
Bugong Road is a narrow and unsealed road that is mistakenly used, potentially due to satellite navigation routing.
Mayor Patricia White said a tanker travelling along the road last month had ruptured its load on a rock shelf, spilling fuel and resulting in enforcement action by Council and the EPA.
"While Bugong Road meets the required standards for a local rural road, recent incidents have highlighted the need for additional warnings for drivers unfamiliar with the area," Cr White said.
"The fuel tanker incident demonstrated the consequences when heavy vehicles are directed onto roads that are not appropriate for their journey," she said.
"We are encouraging transport operators and drivers to follow approved heavy vehicle routes and not rely solely on GPS directions when travelling through rural areas."
New signage is located at the following locations:
Southbound and northbound approaches to Bugong Road.
Bugong Road and Emerys Road intersection.
Bugong Road, Tallowa Dam Road and Mount Scanzi Road intersection.
