Newly Elected Lord Mayor and Council Sworn-In at Government House

A new chapter for the City of Perth was marked tonight at the Swearing-In Ceremony for the newly elected Lord Mayor, Basil Zempilas, and Councillors.

The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia officiated the evening and the Swearing-In of the Lord Mayor and Councillors Elect.

"The individuals sworn-in today will be significantly involved in shaping Perth's future. They will build on the legacy of Perth's founders and bring the desires of the community to the forefront of the capital city local government.

"This is a milestone in Perth's history as we embark on a new decade, and I am honoured to have been a part of it," the Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia said.

The Ceremony took place in the Government House Ballroom and officiated Elected Members in their new role to lead the City and focus on growing Perth as a global city positioned for future prosperity.

The evening began with a smoking ceremony undertaken by Dr Richard Walley OAM, followed up the formal Swearing-In proceedings of the Lord Mayor and eight Councillors.

Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas said it's a fresh start for the City of Perth.

"It is a significant honour to be sworn-in as the 18th Lord Mayor of this great city. It is also a great responsibility and immensely humbling. It is with genuine anticipation I pledge to lead a collaborative, consultative approach to high quality government. I congratulate my eight new colleagues sworn-in this evening," Mr Zempilas said.

Michelle Reynolds City of Perth Chief Executive Officer was Master of Ceremonies for the evening and said the Swearing-In event was a much-anticipated moment, not only for the people of Perth but for Western Australians as a whole.

"This evening we have observed a special event - the swearing in of a full new council comprising of a Lord Mayor and eight Councillors elected by the people of this great city. From tonight onwards, the City of Perth Council will govern the affairs of Western Australia's capital city local government," Ms Reynolds said.
