International Paramedics Day is a global initiative that shines a light on the people who dedicate their lives to patient care. This year's theme, Unity and Community, was selected in recognition of the fact that 'no paramedic works alone'.
Victoria University (VU) established the state's first Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) degree in 1995. Today, the Bachelor of Paramedicine is the longest-running paramedic degree in Australia, and we are also the largest TAFE provider of vocational Certificate and Diploma programs in Paramedical Science and Non-Emergency Patient Transports in Victoria.
Paramedic and Clinical Course Chair Brad Mitchell thinks there are a few reasons why prospective students are drawn to paramedicine.
Despite the undeniable pressure that comes with the profession, students are motivated by the chance to make a meaningful impact in a career that is exciting and constantly changing. The challenges are real, but so is the deep sense of purpose and reward that comes from helping others in their most vulnerable moments.
Third-year student Renee Carter remembers being captivated by the idea of paramedicine at a young age, "like a kid eyeing a superhero cape. I'd pass by the head-office on Queens Road and say to my Mum, Someday I'll be a paramedic."
The 'someday' was decades in the making, as Renee's journey navigated a busy life, marriage, children and a career as a dental nurse. In recent years, working at a dental clinic opposite an Ambulance Victoria branch - the lights, sirens and constant buzz of activity ignited Renee's original dream.
She decided to change careers and enrolled in a Bachelor of Paramedicine at VU.
"My journey has been a whirlwind, equal parts exhilarating, enlightening, occasionally overwhelming, and often humbling. There have been moments of intellectual triumph, moments of caffeine-fueled chaos, and more than a few 'what have I gotten myself into?' monologues."
Renee said a consistent highlight has been connecting with like-minded people with shared passion and what she describes as an unusual enthusiasm for emergency lights, clinical protocols, and adrenaline.
Renee finds the VU Block Model® suits her study style. "Being able to devote my full attention to one subject at a time was a lot less stressful than juggling four subjects. It's a system that works incredibly well for me and has helped me stay (mostly) sane on this wild academic ride."
