Luke's story
It's easy work when you're doing something you love. That's true for North Fitzroy Cycles store manager Luke who was drawn to working in a bike workshop and retail environment because of his enthusiasm for cycling.
Operating both as a retail space and repair shop, North Fitzroy Cycles on St George's Rd are local legends known for their mechanical expertise, and friendly and reliable service.
In recent years Luke's seen the local cycling community grow and diversify with a recent trend towards young people buying mountain bikes to ride along river trails and explore the local area.
He's also witnessed the growing community element of operating a small business in Yarra with the increasing popularity the store's group ride events. Every second Saturday, North Fitzroy Cycles organises a group ride beginning at the shop in Fitzroy North and travelling to Eltham and back, a ride of about 55km.
"It's a great way to connect with like-minded cycling enthusiasts and really get to know people in your local area," Luke said.
"A lot of people who come on our group rides are from local business in the area", Luke said, "heaps of the retail employees within the precinct come together and create that community."
"The sense of community here in North Fitzroy is really strong and it's amazing to literally ride with and support other businesses."
