Mayor's Message

Council has been standing by our community as we heard the news last week from Opal that white paper operations at the Maryvale Mill will cease due to lack of wood supply.

This comes after 85 years of contribution at the Mill. Points of transition such as these are really challenging, industrial changes have a very real impact on our community

and economic landscape.

We can understand frustrations from workers who have been hearing conversations of proposed changes for some time without a clear understanding of who it will impact, what that will look like and exactly when it will occur.

Our hope would have been to see scale ups in other areas of the Mill so workers could be redeployed into other areas. However, we face a reality of having workers displaced.

While industrial changes haven't been a surprise, it does make it difficult to facilitate worker transition without a clear understanding of when changes will take place and how this will impact workers.

Council's role now is an enabler, to bring the community's voice to the Victorian and Federal Government to ensure that they can adequately resource our transition and support Opal workers.

This includes a call to the Victorian Government to fast-track their commitment of establishing the State Electricity Commission in Morwell and associated energy projects to allow for a timely transition.

The last thing we want to see is a loss of these highly skilled workers from our community to other areas. We want there to be certainty of a strong and robust industry here in Latrobe and we will continue to advocate to make this possible.

Cr Kellie O'Callaghan

Mayor of Latrobe City Council
