NSW-Commonwealth agreement to help make energy transition faster and cheaper

"Greater collaboration between the Commonwealth and the States on energy and climate policy is badly needed, and yesterday's agreement with NSW announced by the Prime Minister is an excellent example of what can be achieved," Ai Group Chief Executive, Innes Willox, said today.

"Unlocking new renewable generation zones, connected with transmission and complemented by gas resources, will help accelerate the National Electricity Market's energy transition and slash its costs.

"Facilitating well-regulated gas supply is an important element of NSW's journey to net zero emissions by 2050.

"Given high fuel costs and residual emissions, the State will also and increasingly need other flexible resources like pumped hydro, demand response, and batteries.

"New sources of high grade industrial heat are also needed. But gas is how the electricity system balances today – and it is a critical input for vital industries. Securing supply is one essential step among many," Mr Willox said.
