NT Public Libraries - Connected Communities: Review of Activities 2019-20 report released

Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities

Following an unprecedented and challenging year, an annual highlights report has been released which showcases the work Northern Territory public libraries have undertaken to support our communities in 2019-20.

The report, NT Public Libraries – Connected Communities: Review of Activities 2019-20, demonstrates progress against the Connected Communities: Vision for Northern Territory Public Libraries 2017-2023 strategy, which uses a national outcomes framework to articulate the value that public libraries provide local communities.

There are 31 public library services across the NT, serving culturally and linguistically diverse, mobile and often remote populations.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the closure and then staged re-opening of all Northern Territory public library buildings. Despite the challenges faced, library staff worked rapidly and effectively to continue to support their communities by ensuring services were able to be provided to members.

NT public libraries identified vulnerable users and expanded services to meet their needs, including providing home library services, printing and photocopying collect services, and assistance with accessing online programs or services.

Library staff became adept at digital recording and editing to make livestreams and published recordings of online programs available such as virtual story-times, author talks and workshops.

The range of eBooks, eAudiobooks and other electronic resources were expanded, and click and collect services were established for those members who preferred print to digital.

Key statistics from the report include:

· More than 700,000 in person visits

· 669,950 items borrowed

· 2,760 programs and events with more than 73,000 attendees

· 364,777 internet sessions through NT Government funded Wi-Fi hotspots in 46 Aboriginal communities

· 31% of the NT population are library members
