OAS Secretariat Mourns Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay

OAS

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) expresses its deepest sorrow at the passing today of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay of Colombia.

Senator Uribe's dedication to democratic principles, public service, and the defense of his convictions made him a respected voice in Colombia's political life and a valued member of the inter-American democratic community. His tragic death, the result of an act of violence, is a profound loss for Colombia and for all who believe in dialogue, tolerance, and the peaceful resolution of differences.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, and the people of Colombia, and we stand in solidarity with the Colombian authorities in their efforts to bring those responsible to justice.

The OAS General Secretariat reaffirms its commitment to supporting Colombia in safeguarding its democratic institutions, strengthening the rule of law, and promoting the culture of peace that Senator Uribe's life and work sought to uphold.

In the face of this tragic loss, the OAS Secretary General, Albert R. Ramdin, expressed that "our most meaningful tribute to his memory must be to continue our collective efforts to build a hemisphere where political violence has no place."
