Officer assaulted during arrest at Lake Macquarie

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Lake Macquarie yesterday.

About 10.15pm yesterday (Monday 13 April 2020), officers from Lake Macquarie Police District were attending a caravan park on Freemans Drive, Freemans Waterhole in relation to an unrelated stolen caravan.

During their inquiries, one of the officers was allegedly attacked unprovoked by a 31-year-old man.

The man allegedly ran directly into the officer, before punching and kicking him.

Police used a taser to detain the man and he was arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station, where he was assessed by NSW Ambulance Paramedics.

Following inquiries, the man was charged with an outstanding warrant, breach of community corrections order, assault police, resist arrest, and possess prescribed restricted substance.

He appeared in Newcastle Local Court today (Tuesday 14 April 2020), where he was granted conditional bail, to reappear in Wyong Local Court on Wednesday 13 May 2020.
