Officer assaulted, man charged - Bondi Junction

A man will face court today after punching a police officer in Bondi Junction yesterday.

At 2.30pm on Thursday (15 August 2019), plain clothes police were patrolling the Bondi Junction CBD when they approached three men acting suspiciously outside a licensed premise on Oxford Street.

When the officers identified themselves to the men, two of the men ran from the police and a chase ensued.

One of the men was apprehended a short distance away. At this time, the second man, aged 24, stepped in front of the officer and punched him in the side of his head. The Constable attempted to block the hit with his left hand, injuring his thumb.

The two men fled the scene.

Following inquiries, the 24-year-old man was identified, and police learned that he had a freshly issued revocation of a parole warrant.

At 7.30pm yesterday the same day, officers arrested the 24-year-old in a licensed premise on Bronte Road in Bondi Junction.

He was taken to Waverley Police Station and charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, obstruct/hinder/interfere with police officer and revocation of parole warrant.

The man was refused bail and will appear at Waverley Local Court on Friday 16 August 2019.
