The Allan Labor Government is boosting community health and local tourism in Bendigo, with work now underway on a safer and more accessible way for cyclists and pedestrians to access some of the regional city's best locations.
Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards, today represented Minister for Regional Development, Jacyln Symes, during an inspection of the 'Bendigo Low Line' project, set to complete the missing link in the Bendigo Creek Trail.
The project was made possible thanks to a $5 million investment from the Labor Government through the Council Support Package, as well as more than $2 million from the City of Greater Bendigo.
The shared pathway will be built along 4.4 kilometers of the Bendigo Creek channel and run from Lake Weeroona to Golden Square. Once completed, it will link many of Bendigo's major attractions, including Rosalind Park, the Golden Dragon Museum, Central Deborah Gold Mine and the city centre.
Designed to encourage active travel, the Low Line will divert cyclists from busy roads and connect seamlessly with Bendigo's existing network of walking and cycling paths, helping locals and visitors access their workplace, schools, shops, parks and public spaces in a healthier and more sustainable way.
The new pathway will feature 14 entry and exit points to cater for Bendigo residents - 95,000 of whom live within 5kms of the Bendigo Creek channel.
Project works will also include lighting, signage, seating, landscaping and the construction of retaining walls and drainage. Sections of the pathway will be opened to the public as they are completed, with the whole project expected to be fully completed in late 2026.
The name 'Bendigo Low Line' reflects the channel section of the Bendigo Creek and takes inspiration from the creative and cultural success of New York's High Line, that was created on a disused, elevated railway structure.
