One Dead in St Marys Unit Fire, Police Probe

An investigation is underway after a man has died and a woman was taken to a hospital following a unit fire in Sydney's west.

Just after 7.15pm on Wednesday 25 February 2026, emergency services were called to Putland Street, St Mary, following reports of a unit fire.

On arrival, officers attached to Nepean Police Area Command located the third floor of the unit complex well alight.

A woman - believed to be in her 40s - managed to evacuate from the unit and she was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Fire and Rescue attended the scene extinguished the blaze before they recovered a body of a man inside the unit.

While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be the one of a man in his 40s.

A crime scene has been established, and police commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
