Online learning upgrade to support vulnerable Victorians

Liberal Party Victoria

A Matt Guy led Government will support Hope City Mission to continue its vital work with local communities with a $25,000 commitment to upgrade its online learning portal.

Established in 2004, Hope City Mission provides a safe space for those experiencing financial hardship to receive support and education about managing their situation, as well as offering a range of additional services, including foodbank, to help get them back on their feet.

The Online Learning Portal was designed to create an encouraging environment to educate those who are vulnerable and have limited financial literacy skills, in order to empower them to make sound and informed decisions.

It offers 17 courses on various topics around financial literacy, and life skills, such as how to budget, debt relief strategies, how to write a resume, employment, setting goals, banking superannuation.

Currently, there is a stark gap in the organisation's ability to support those from non-English speaking backgrounds, and the $25,000 commitment will ensure this problem is gone for good by translating the Online Learning Portal into Burmese (Chin Haka) and Mandarin.

Shadow Minister for Education, David Hodgett, said the funding pledge would give Hope City Mission the confidence to continue its important work with the local community.

"There is a real gap in what Hope City Mission can offer to those from non-English speaking backgrounds, and we must ensure that everyone is properly supported to learn and grow," Mr Hodgett said.

"This commitment to fund the upgrade of Hope City Mission's Online Learning Portal will do just that."
