OPCW Director-General Visits Syria

The Foreign Minister and the Director-General discussed progress in locating and destroying the remnants of the Assad-era chemical weapons programme and agreed to strengthen cooperation.

The OPCW, the global chemical weapons watchdog, has been working for well over a decade to investigate and document chemical weapons use in Syria; including the horrific attacks in Khan Shaykoun in 2017 and Douma in 2018.

The Foreign Minister and the Director-General recognised the milestone achieved with the first verified destruction of chemical weapons in August this year. The Director-General underscored her commitment to working closely with Syria to find and eliminate any remaining Assad-era chemical weapons. She emphasised the importance of protecting civilian populations in Syria and the wider region from chemical weapons proliferation.

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Syria's commitment to the full implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and emphasised the importance of ensuring that those responsible for chemical weapons use are held to account.

The Foreign Minister and the Director-General looked forward to continuing their dialogue.
