Operation Fume targets driver safety and behaviour - North

More than 130 infringements have been issued during a large-scale traffic enforcement operation targeting poor driver behaviour in Sydney's north-west this weekend.

Operation Fume was conducted by officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command North West Sector, with assistance from The Hills, Parramatta and Ryde Police Area Commands between Friday (5 March 2021) and yesterday (Saturday 6 March 2021).

During the operation, 133 infringement notices were issued, six vehicles were issued with defect notices, six criminal charges and four traffic charges were laid.

Police conducted 678 breath tests, with two people charged with drink-driving offences – including one for mid-range PCA and one for high range PCA.

About 5.35pm yesterday (Saturday 6 March 2021), officers from Parramatta Highway Patrol detected a Ford Falcon sedan on Gilba Road, Girraween, travelling at 87km/h in a 50km/h marked zone. After speaking with the driver, checks revealed the 51-year-old man had an expired licence and was disqualified from driving, and that stolen number plates were attached to the car.

The man was arrested and taken to Parramatta Police Station where he was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period – second offence, use class A vehicle with unauthorised number plate affixed, receive/dispose stolen property, possess/attempt to, prescribed restricted substance, and class A motor vehicle exceed speed (more than 30 km/h).

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Thursday 11 March 2021.

About 9:35pm (Saturday 6 March 2021), officers from The Hills Highway Patrol were conducting patrols at Freeman Avenue, Castle Hill when they stopped a white Holden Commodore and spoke to the driver, a 37-year-old man. Officers conducted a search of the car when they located a number of allegedly stolen identification documents and other items including a mobile phone. The man was arrested and taken to Castle Hill Police Station where he was charged with goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not motor vehicle). He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Sunday 7 March 2021).

Operation Fume is a road policing operation targeting criminal and alcohol related, anti-social behaviour and road related trauma.

Similar operations are expected to continue in the future.
