Optus Stadium turns up heat on record breaking summer

  • Perth Scorchers attendance outshines Eastern States venues
  • Over 650,000 patrons attended Optus Stadium over the summer season
  • Optus Stadium is ready to welcome back AFL

The glow around Optus Stadium's record breaking summer is expected to extend into this weekend with a bumper crowd of Eagles and Dockers fans predicted to turn out for the first Western Derby

When the Scorchers won the Big Bash League (BBL) Grand Final they did so in front of nearly 54,000 fans, setting a new cricket attendance record for any BBL final in history.

The fan experience on offer at Optus Stadium, coupled with the outstanding success of the Perth Scorchers, resulted in Western Australians flocking to Optus Stadium in record numbers throughout the cricket season.

Of the 10 highest attended BBL matches this season, seven were played at 'the Furnace', despite Perth having a significantly smaller population than Eastern States capital cities. The Grand Final in February represented the fourth largest BBL crowd ever, and the largest crowd to ever attend a cricket match in Perth.

The only matches outside Optus Stadium to feature in the top 10 were the New Year's Eve game at Adelaide Oval, the Sydney Derby at the SCG and the MCG's Melbourne Derby.

It's not just sporting events setting records, Ed Sheeran's recent performance in front of 73,092 fans set a new attendance record for both Optus Stadium and Western Australian venues.

Nearly 13,000 guests also attended meetings and special events within the venue's more than 40 private function spaces.

The venue's mantra of 'fans first' was highlighted in the customer satisfaction results; 92 per cent satisfaction for Scorchers matches, 92 per cent at the T20 Australia v England match and 83 per cent for Guns and Roses.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

"Western Australia continues to punch above our weight against other States in delivering world class sport and entertainment experiences.

"Optus Stadium is one of the world's great venues and attracts thousands of interstate and international visitors every year.

"With the AFL season now upon us, the venue will fill with Fremantle and West Coast Eagles supporters as they flock to the stadium in support of their team."
