Our Journeys I Our Stories

Georges River Council

Market gardeners, international students, restaurateurs, artists and opera singers were among those who have set their roots in the Georges River area since the 1870s and shaped the local Chinese community in Sydney's south.

In a major exhibition by Georges River Council, Sydneysiders will soon be able to explore the changing face and history of Chinese migration.

Our Journeys I Our Stories tells a story of past and present Chinese settlers through the eyes of six internationally renowned Australian Chinese artists, Lindy Lee, Guan Wei, Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen, Xiao Lu, Jason Phu and Guo Jian, unveiling new artworks based on their personal interpretations of historical documents and imagery selected from local Chinese history.

In addition, a collection of rare historical items that once were and still are significant memories of yesteryear will take viewers onto a journey back to where it all began.

The exhibition will run at the Hurstville Museum and Gallery from 24 July to 13 October 2021, with support from the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Create NSW.

Georges River Mayor Kevin Greene said, "While the local Chinese community has evolved significantly in the past two centuries, their contribution and significance in building the culture and reputation in Sydney's south remains constant."

"Our Journeys | Our Stories explores the rich history of Chinese migration to St George region, uncovering identity and stories of our people and place.

"Exhibitions like this celebrate the diverse cultures and talents we are proud to have in Georges River area."

National Foundation for Australia-China Relations Chief Executive Michaela Browning said, "Our Journeys | Our Stories celebrates the incredible contribution that Australians with Chinese heritage make to Australian society, on a local level in the Georges River area, and to the nation as a whole."

Our Journeys | Our Stories uses art and history to explore a timeline of local Chinese migration in Sydney from its humble beginning, through the struggles and survivals, and how Chinese life, culture and food add to the flavours of our Georges River diverse community.
