P-plater caught travelling 39km/h above speed limit

A P-plater has been disqualified from driving for three months after police detected the 18-year-old travelling 39km/h over the speed limit on the West Tamar Highway at Riverside on Wednesday.

The P2 driver was detected as part of a targeted traffic operation, prompted by a number of recent crashes in the West Tamar area.

He was fined $828.75 and lost 6 demerit points, and is now subject to further loss of licence due to being a provisional driver and only holding 4 demerit points.

The 90-minute traffic operation involved members from Northern Road Policing Services who targeted the fatal five offences.

During the operation police detected the following -

6 x speeding offences

1 x mobile phone offence

1 x seatbelt offence

1 x unlicensed driver

Inspector Darren Hopkins said each offence was one of the fatal five, which were contributing factors to serious and fatal crashes.

"Speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, using a mobile phone, and driving while fatigued put all road users at risk," he said.

"Tasmania Police will continue to conduct high visibility enforcement activities aimed at improving driver behaviour and to help make our roads safer."
