Council is setting the stage for Pakenham's transformation with the launch of the first stage of the Pakenham Revitalisation Project, a bold 12-stage initiative to reimagine the town centre.
The revitalisation will deliver a more pedestrian-friendly, accessible, and connected environment that supports residents, visitors, and local businesses. With a strong focus on liveability, economic activation, and community connection, the project will create welcoming public spaces and improve access to key destinations such as the new Pakenham train station and the Pakenham Community Hospital.
A Glimpse into the Future: Gateway Precinct
The first stage of the project will transform the Gateway precinct between Drake Place and the Henty Street roundabout. Design renders unveiled by Council showcase a vibrant, people-first space featuring:
- Wider footpaths and improved pedestrian access
- Updated parking for safety and compliance
- High-quality street furniture, bins, and seating
- Enhanced lighting and flexible event spaces
- Improved landscaping integrated with Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) works
- Better street dining opportunities and public space connections
- Staged construction to minimise disruption to traffic and trade
Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Jack Kowarzik said the revitalisation reflects the community's aspirations for a safer, more vibrant and inclusive town centre.
"Pakenham has changed dramatically over recent years, and we are planning for its growth now and into the future," Mayor Kowarzik said. "These refreshed designs reflect our community's call for a place we can proud of, a place that puts people first and supports a thriving night-time economy."
Strategic Planning for Long-Term Impact
To improve safety and visibility, Council also reconfigured 16 street parking spaces on Drake Place with new spaces added along Station Street to offset this impact, resulting in an overall increase of over 740 spaces in the Pakenham precinct with the completion of the Pakenham Train Station carpark. Following a strategic review, Council has refined the project's design and sequencing to align with funding availability and evolving community needs. This ensures financial sustainability while delivering high-impact features that benefit the whole community.
Cardinia Shire Council CEO Peter Benazic highlighted the broader vision, emphasising the project's role as a cornerstone in shaping Pakenham's long-term growth.
"With the town centre evolving into a key regional hub, the revitalisation is designed to meet the demands of a rapidly expanding population while preserving the unique character of the community," Mr Benazic said. "This project is about creating a connected and future-ready activity centre that meets the diverse needs of our growing population. We're proud to be delivering a space that supports local businesses, attracts visitors, and a welcoming environment for all."
Community at the Heart
Residents and traders were invited to provide feedback to help shape each stage of the revitalisation. Construction is expected to begin in October following the appointment of a tender, marking the start of a multi-stage transformation that will shape Pakenham's future for decades to come.
