Pakistan heat wave death toll rises

Another 22 people have died by Tuesday due to heat stroke in the deadly heat wave that hit Pakistan's southern Sindh province last week taking the toll up to 1,239.

The weather forecast suggests partly cloudy day today in Karachi. In the coming three days, it is likely to drizzle. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has termed the rains in different parts of Punjab as pre-monsoon showers.

Hospitals have been on a crisis footing and dedicated heatstroke treatment centres have been set up around the city to treat the tens of thousands affected by heatstroke and dehydration. The pace of the deaths has slowed as the weather has cooled in the last four days.

Karachi hospitals have treated nearly 80,000 people for the effects of heatstroke and dehydration, according to medical officials.

The heatwave struck Karachi at a time when the city s Muslim majority was observing the dawn-to-dusk fasting month of Ramazan, further worsening the situation. Repeated power outrages across the province, and particularly in Karachi, exacerbated the situation.

Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif cancelled his visit to Karachi due to some official engagements. According to official sources, the Prime Minister will now visit Karachi on Wednesday.

The premier will review situation arising after heat wave in the city, power crisis, measures regarding reduction in load shedding and law & order situation.
