Paramedics roll up their sleeves to donate blood

Paramedics are rolling up their sleeves to donate in the Australian Red Cross Blood Service Emergency Services Blood Challenge over the next three months.

Unfortunately we know only too well the importance of donating blood.

On average paramedics attend 60 car accidents a day across Victoria.

In some cases like Jacob Fry's crash, blood can be the difference between life and death.

Ten years ago, Jacob was kept alive by paramedics until he reached The Alfred hospital where he required a massive 36 litres of blood during his treatment.

Since 2011, our air ambulance helicopters and planes have routinely carried blood for transfusions by paramedics.

In that time we've provided pre-hospital tranfusions to almost 250 people.

While paramedics will go head-to-head against other emergency services in the Emergency Services Blood Challenge, you don't need to be an emergency worker to save lives.

One blood donation can save up to three lives. Visit donateblood.com.au or Call 13 14 95 to donate.
