Parkes Shire Council is proud to announce its successful participation in the NSW Government's Fresh Start Program, unlocking exciting employment opportunities for jobseekers and young people across the region.

The NSW Government is investing $252.2 million over six years to support local councils in creating 1,300 new positions for apprentices, trainees, and cadets. This initiative is part of a bold vision to ensure 15% of the local government workforce comprises apprentices and trainees, with a focus on high-demand roles.

Through this program, Parkes Shire Council has secured funding for 11 new roles across Rounds 1 and 2, with 100% wage support and 15% on-costs (including superannuation) covered by the NSW Government. These roles span a variety of fields, offering people a valuable entry point into local government and the chance to build meaningful careers.

Under Round 1 the following positions have been filled: Small Plant Apprentice, Parks and Gardens Apprentice, Apprentice Plumber, Concrete Apprentice and Work Health and Safety Trainee.

There are still three roles that needs to be filled under Round 1 for an Apprentice Electrician, a Cadet Planner, and a Civil Engineering Cadet.

The Round 2 roles secured by Council are for a Finance Trainee, a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Apprentice and a Works Coordinator Trainee.

The roles not yet filled are currently being advertised and potential candidates are encouraged to put in applications.

Manager People, Safety and Culture, Pat Williams, said the program was a game-changer for both Council and the community.

"The Fresh Start Program allows us to invest in the future of Parkes by giving people a foot in the door and the chance to thrive," Mr Williams said. "We're not just filling roles—we're building careers, strengthening our workforce, and supporting the next generation of skilled professionals who will help shape our region."

With over 50,000 people employed across NSW's 128 councils, local government is a major employer and a powerful training ground. Many who begin their careers in councils go on to strengthen local industries with the skills and experience they've gained.

Parkes Shire Council encourages eligible jobseekers and school leavers to explore these opportunities and apply before the cut-off dates.
