Parliament Approves New Burnie Courts Complex

The replacement Burnie Courts Complex has reached a major milestone, with the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Public Works approving the project.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said the complex will improve access to justice in the North West of the State by providing contemporary fit-for-purpose infrastructure for our clients and stakeholders.

"The project will help revitalise the Burnie CBD and deliver jobs and investment for the North West, with local businesses to benefit from increased trade both during construction and ongoing operations," Minister Barnett said.
"The building contract is in the final stages. It is expected that building will begin in the coming months.
"We will keep the Tasmanian community updated as this significant project continues to progress over the coming months."
Importantly, the new court complex will:

• Ensure access to justice for the North West community through the provision of two Magistrates Courts, one Supreme Court and one flexible multi-jurisdictional Court.

• Improve safety and amenity for all court-users

• Improve disability access; and

• Enable contemporary functioning of the facilities, including through the use of technology.

The replacement Complex will be constructed at 106 Wilson Street in Burnie's Central Business District.
