Premier Mark McGowan and Health Minister Roger Cook have released plans for the $5 million expansion of the Peel Health Campus emergency department.
Residents in the Peel region will benefit from the upgraded emergency department which will assist with patient flow, enhance patient confidentiality and privacy, and improve overall patient comfort and satisfaction.
The expansion includes:
- a new fast-track area to improve patient triage;
- new holding bays designed for more privacy for patients awaiting inpatient admission;
- reconfiguration of the existing triage area to facilitate early senior medical review and to improve patient privacy and comfort;
- redesign of the emergency department waiting room; and
- the addition of seven beds to the short stay unit to further streamline patient flow from the emergency department
Conceptual planning and design has been completed with approval in principle received from the state Licensing and Accreditation Regulatory Unit (LARU).
A full set of construction drawings and specifications are currently being prepared for 'approval to construct' with the intention to advertise to the market on Tenders WA in September 2019.
Construction is expected to commence early February 2020 with an estimated completion date in August 2020.
In addition to these works, the 225 car parking bay expansion at Peel Health Campus is set to get underway mid-August, for completion in November 2019, with the local branch of the Industrial Roadpavers awarded the tender.
The carpark project forms part of the initial $4.4 million investment by the McGowan Government which includes an improved nurse call system, increased security systems and a range of building maintenance projects.
These expansion projects will ensure Peel Health Campus can continue to deliver hospital services to the Peel region and is able to respond to the needs of the growing local community, and will create additional work for the civil and building construction industries, which will help boost the local economy.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
"Our significant expansion and refurbishment projects at our hospitals across WA help improve patient flow and care, ensure our hospitals continue to meet patient needs and create jobs through construction and works.
"Works on the Peel Health Campus emergency department upgrades will commence in February 2020 and the emergency department will remain open throughout construction, this has been a big consideration in the redesign."
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
"It has taken an enormous amount of consultation and work to get to this point and I am pleased to see the progress.
"The refurbishment of the emergency department will optimise the use of the Peel Health Campus and sustain the provision of high quality patient care. It will help our health staff who already do a wonderful job better provide care and attention our patients need."
"I look forward to progressing other significant developments at Peel Health Campus when the Federal Government makes available $25 million promised during the general election campaign."
