Pentagon Awards $35.8 Million Contract to Mettler-Toledo Rainin, LLC to Increase Domestic Production Capacity of Pipette Tips

U.S. Department of Defense

10, 2021, the Department of Defense (DOD), on behalf of and in coordination with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), awarded a $35.8 million contract to Mettler-Toledo Rainin, LLC (Rainin) to increase domestic production capacity of pipette tips for both manual and automated laboratory procedures.

The Rainin pipette tips are an essential consumable for both COVID-19 research and testing of collected samples and other critical diagnostic activities.

This industrial base expansion effort will allow Rainin to increase production capacity of pipette tips by 70 million tips per month by January 2023.

This effort will also allow Rainin to install a pipette tip sterilization facility by September 2023.

Both efforts will be completed in Oakland, California to support domestic COVID-19 testing and research.

The DOD's Defense Assisted Acquisition Cell (DA2) led this effort in coordination with the Department of the Air Force's Acquisition COVID-19 Task Force (DAF ACT).

This effort was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to support domestic industrial base expansion for critical medical resources.
