Homicide Squad detectives have charged a photographer with alleged stealing offences in the wake of the Bondi Beach terror attack.
About 6.40pm on Sunday 14 December 2025, emergency services were called to Bondi Beach following reports of a public place shooting.
Officers attached to Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command, surrounding commands and specialist police responded and located two men firing into a crowd of people with long arm firearms.
As officers exchanged fire with the men, a 50-year-old suffered fatal injuries and a 24-year-old man was injured and arrested. He has since been charged and remains before the courts.
As a result of the incident, 15 people – aged between 10 and 87 – were killed.
Detectives from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team took carriage of the investigation into the attack, while detectives from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad commenced a secondary critical incident investigation into the actions of police.
As inquiries by the Homicide Squad continued, detectives identified that one of the victims – a 61-year-old retired police officer and photographer – had his camera equipment stolen in the aftermath of the attack.
About 6.30am yesterday (Wednesday 20 May 2026), executed a search warrant in Marayong.
At the address, police located and seized a camera, handcuffs, and electronic devices.
During a search of a car, police located and seized a small amount of white crystal powder and further electronics.
A 35-year-old was arrested and taken to Riverstone Police Station, where he was charged with larceny value >$ 2000 &small &
The man was granted strict conditional bail to appear before Blacktown Local Court on Monday 22 June 2026.
Police will allege the man was a photographer at the Hannukah event who stole the deceased 61-year-old's camera equipment before pawning it days later.
