Leading Seaman Ernesto Sanchez is the first Navy photographer awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross, making him the most highly decorated imagery specialist in the workforce's history.
Since joining the Navy as a stores sailor in 2009, his career has taken him around the world.
His work was recognised in the 2025 Australia Day awards, acknowledging his dedication to capturing the stories of Australia's military personnel through imagery.
The citation credits his outstanding achievement in imagery and public affairs over regional presence deployments on HMA Ships Toowoomba, Supply, Ballarat and Arunta from 2020 to 2023.
Leading Seaman Sanchez's photography is credited with helping improve relationships with regional partners and increase the Australian public's awareness the ADF's Indo-Pacific operations.
'I just wanted to contribute to the mission and create memories for the people I saw as family, my shipmates.'
Captain Cindy Jenkins, former Commanding Officer of HMAS Supply, said Leading Seaman Sanchez's personality was infectious.
"He took his role seriously, which meant that everything he did was executed professionally and confidently, but with humour, character and charisma," she said.
From early 2021 to late 2024, Leading Seaman Sanchez deployed to the Indo-Pacific in support of multiple operations and other activities, including Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) and Indo-Pacific Endeavour.
"I just wanted to contribute to the mission and create memories for the people I saw as family, my shipmates," Leading Seaman Sanchez said.
The last Navy imagery specialist to receive a similar award was Chief Petty Officer Paul Berry, who received a Conspicuous Service Medal.
