Wagga Wagga City Council will be working to minimise disruptions to traffic conditions for residents and road users when construction works on the next stage of the Pine Gully Road Corridor upgrade start early next year (2026).
At its meeting on Monday 25 August 2025, Council endorsed the tender for construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Pine Gully Road with Cootamundra Boulevard and Avocet Drive at Gobbagombalin.
The Scope of Works includes the preliminary works, demolition, earthworks, road pavement, stormwater drainage, concrete works, road furniture, landscaping, line marking, lighting improvements, and utilities associated with the construction of the intersection.
Council's Director Infrastructure Services Henry Pavitt says it is anticipated the contractors will start work in the new year, with the commencement date yet to be confirmed.
"The works are expected to take up to three months to complete, pending the availability of material and weather permitting," Mr Pavitt said.
"There is a good chance there will be partial closures at times and possibly some full-closures of Pine Gully Road to north and south bound traffic at the Cootamundra Boulevard and Avocet Drive intersection during construction.
"We are aware these closures will cause delays for residents in the surrounding suburbs such as Estella Rise and Gobbagombalin, through limiting access points in and out of suburbs.
"We also know they will have implication for the Estella Public School community, and students, staff and visitors to Charles Sturt University and the NSW DPI - Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute, as well the broader Wagga Wagga community.
"Now the contract has been approved, we will work with contractors on a traffic management plan with the aim of minimising the impacts of the closure on residents and motorists, and start the process of notifying bus services, the schools, the university and residents."
The timing of the start of works takes into consideration the amount of disruption road users will experience in coming months from other projects in the city, such as the Marshalls Creek Bridge replacement project (Transport for NSW) and the trial closure of the Edmondson Street bridge (Inland Rail).
The intersection treatment is Stage 2 of the Pine Gully Road Corridor upgrade project, which is designed to improve road safety for motorists, pedestrians, and residents of the area, across a project site that stretches from the Old Narrandera Road intersection in the south to Estella Road in the north.
Once complete, the new intersection will provide another connection point for residents and road users travelling between Gobbagombalin and Boorooma Street.
"Around 2500 local residents will receive a letterbox drop over the coming months to let them know what's going on, because it is going to be a reasonably big disruption for that space," Mr Pavitt said.
"We will keep residents and the community informed as this process is developed and finalised."
The Pine Gully Road upgrade project is funded by Wagga Wagga City Council.
