Site establishment works commenced this week (27 January 2026) ahead the start of the main construction works on the upgrade of the intersection at Pine Gully Road and Cootamundra Boulevard.
The works involve the full road closure at the Pine Gully Road and Cootamundra Boulevard intersection for the duration of the construction phase, which is expected to be complete by the end of April 2026.
The intersection treatment is Stage 2 of the Pine Gully Road Corridor upgrade project, and includes construction of a new roundabout, traffic islands, kerb and guttering, and drainage improvements.
The southern, northern, and western approaches to the intersection were closed on Tuesday 27 January, while fences have been placed around the construction zone.
From next week (2 February 2026), the contractor will begin service locating and bulk earthworks at the site.
Council's Director Infrastructure Services Henry Pavitt thanked residents and motorists for the patience in adjusting to the new traffic conditions along this key road corridor.
"We acknowledge the closure of this intersection will be disruptive for residents who live in the surrounding suburbs and for those travelling to the area, particularly during the peak work and school traffic times," Mr Pavitt said.
"We encourage the community to allow extra time for the longer journey and the additional traffic which will be using the Muttama Parade-Pine Gully Road intersection and the Old Narrandera Road-Olympic Highway intersection during the roundabout construction."
During the closure of the intersection, detours will be along Estella Road and Boorooma Street and the temporary access road in the north of Gobbagombalin and Estella Rise, and via Muttama Parade in the south, or Harris Road in the west.
Access to the footpath at the eastern end of Cootamundra Boulevard and the shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on the western side of Pine Gully Road will be maintained for the majority of the works.
However, there will be a two-to-three-week period where pedestrians will be detoured via Harris Road due to service and drainage works at the intersection.
Council will notify residents and install signage to direct pedestrians when this temporary closure of the paths occurs.
The Pine Gully Road upgrade project is designed to improve road safety for motorists, pedestrians, and residents of the area, across a project site that stretches from the Old Narrandera Road intersection in the south to Estella Road in the north.
The Pine Gully Road upgrade project is funded by Wagga Wagga City Council.
