Logan City Council is looking well beyond the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games as it enters the next stage of preparations for a proposed indoor sports venue in Logan Central.
Council earlier this month resolved to seek a multifunctional design to ensure the venue supports a variety of sporting and community needs well beyond the Games.
This could include configurations for multiple courts for indoor sports such as basketball, volleyball and futsal along with the ability to host new and emerging activities such as e-sports and dance sports.
The venue could also host conferences, exhibitions and corporate events.
The goal will be to ensure the venue is utilised for as many hours each day as possible.
Council will work with the Queensland Government and Games organisers in coming months to formulate a detailed business case for the venue.
A community forum is also proposed for the middle of next year to develop and finalise the next stages of Council's 2032 City of Logan Legacy Roadmap.
The Roadmap, which includes the delivery of the multi-purpose venue, outlines 19 initiatives aimed at ensuring a strong legacy from the hosting of the Games in South East Queensland.
These include:
- Securing new facilities and infrastructure
- Stimulating economic growth
- Promoting active living and participation in sport
- Leveraging the multicultural roots within the local community.
Council welcomes the recent launch of the Queensland Government's Elevate 2042 strategy, which seeks to ensure a long-lasting Games legacy for our region.
Mayor Darren Power joined Council staff in working with the Council of Mayors South East Queensland (CoMSEQ), to ensure the City of Logan's priorities were heard by the Queensland Government and Games organisers in the development of the strategy.
Councillor Power said community feedback on the Roadmap had reiterated the city's desire to support and secure new opportunities in sport, transport, infrastructure and economic development.
"While our budding sport stars dream of Olympic gold, local families and businesses can also look towards the opportunities that might arise from hosting the world's biggest sports event," Cr Power said.
