The McGowan Government has broken ground on the long-anticipated Ocean Reef Marina project, which will now feature Perth's first coastal pool, paving the way for more than 8,000 construction jobs and a $3 billion injection into the Western Australian economy.
The first stage, now underway, involves ground works to facilitate the construction of marina infrastructure and public amenities.
The project, which was a 2017 election commitment, will deliver an iconic waterfront precinct providing recreational, tourism, residential and boating facilities for local residents and visitors.
Approximately 12,000sqm of retail and commercial space, integrated with more than five hectares of community space, will cater for a range of new and expanded businesses such as cafés and restaurants.
On completion, it is expected the marina will provide ongoing employment for more than 900 people.
The marina is now set to feature Perth's first coastal pool and the State Government will commit a further $6.5 million to the project.
The coastal pool will be located within the protected beach area, and will be available for locals and visitors to swim laps in and to play aquatic sports.
The $6.5 million in additional funding will help relocate the Marine Rescue Whitfords and Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club (ORSSC) to new facilities within the multimillion-dollar development by 2023.
The Joondalup City RSL memorial will also be relocated to a suitable location within the central open space at the Ocean Reef Marina development and in close proximity to the new ORSSC site. The location and design will accommodate large gatherings such as Anzac Day memorial services.
The McGowan Government has now committed $126.5 million in funding for the marina over the life of the project. The project is also expected to generate more than $900 million in private and public sector investment.
The State Government's development corporation, DevelopmentWA, is responsible for the construction of the marina. The City of Joondalup is a project partner.
