Playing Your Part For Happy New Year

City of Port Phillip
Port Phillip Council is reminding New Year's revellers to play their part for a safe celebration by following the annual alcohol ban.

The City-wide alcohol ban across public spaces applies from 8 pm 30 December to 12 midday 2 January. A ban on sealed containers of alcohol along the foreshore is in place from 9 am on 30 December to 9 am 1 January.

The annual St Kilda foreshore alcohol ban, which began on 1 November, continues until 31 March 2026.

Council's Local Laws Officers will be out and about supporting Victoria Police as they enforce the alcohol ban in public spaces including parks and beaches. Breaching the ban risks confiscation and a $204 fine.

Mayor Alex Makin said the ban is part of Council's wide-ranging annual campaign aimed at helping deliver a safe and successful summer.

"Every year thousands of visitors join residents in making the most of Port Phillip's fabulous locations including our iconic foreshore," Cr Makin said.

"We're reminding everyone to follow our summer management rules so these spaces stay clean and safe at this incredibly popular time of the year. There's plenty of fantastic venues to visit to raise a glass to ring in the New Year."

A permanent glass ban, enforced across all foreshore beaches, reserves and parklands, carries the same $204 fine.

Cr Makin urged revellers to keep public spaces enjoyable and to avoid litter affecting vulnerable animal and marine life. Extra public bins have been put out across the City and it's a great idea to bring a bag to take rubbish home if necessary.

Pet owners should also check dog off-leash restrictions as they change from 1 November to 31 March.

Managing public spaces over the New Year is a multi-agency effort with partners including Victoria Police, Liquor Licensing, Ambulance Victoria, Parks Victoria, Yarra Trams, Department of Transport, Public Transport Victoria and Life Saving Victoria.
