There are so many things about the Kempsey Shire that make me proud to be Mayor, but one that really stands out is the people who help bring incredible events to our region. These events are about so much more than a single weekend. They mean people staying locally, supporting our businesses, filling our cafes and shops and getting a genuine taste of why we love where we live.
A recent example was Transmoto, when more than 450 riders rolled into town for an epic motorcycle event. You could feel the energy everywhere. The sound of bikes, the buzz around the streets and riders and spectators from all over experiencing our backyard made for a fantastic atmosphere.
A massive thank you to everyone involved in bringing this to life. Events like Transmoto really showcase what our region can offer and the strength of community behind them.
There's plenty happening in the coming weeks as well. With school holidays just around the corner, families and visitors can look forward to lots to do right here in the Macleay Valley.
One big highlight coming up is international rugby in Kempsey. On Wednesday 8 April at Verge Street Oval, we'll host two matches as part of the NSW Rugby Union's Coffs Coast Festival of Rugby. Japan U23s will take on the Australian Stockman at 3pm, followed by Fiji U20s versus Australia U20s at 5pm. Entry is by gold coin donation, so it's a great opportunity to see high‑level rugby right on our doorstep.
Our libraries will also be busy during the school holidays, with a range of activities to keep kids entertained. These include bird-themed sessions and manga drawing workshops with local artist Stephen McLeod. I encourage families to jump onto the Kempsey shire libraries website to find out more and register.
Easter is also approaching. Please take care on the roads and enjoy the break. There will be some changes to Council services over the long weekend, with customer service closed on Friday 3 April and Monday 6 April, reopening as usual on Tuesday 7 April 2026. After‑hours services remain available by calling 6566 3200 and the Waste Management Centre on Crescent Head Road will remain open.
Enjoy Easter, stay safe and keep supporting everything that makes the Macleay such a great place to live.
