Police arrest two for illegal use at Cowandilla, South Australia

Two people were arrested after police spotted a stolen car in the western suburbs in the early hours of this morning.

Just after 2am on Friday 18 February, a stolen black Volvo station wagon was spotted by a patrol in St Vincent Street, Port Adelaide. PolAir managed to track it along Port Road as it headed towards the city and through the western suburbs at high speed.

The passenger got out and ran shortly before the car pulled into a Fenner Avenue, Cowandilla, a dead end street.

As the Volvo tried to leave the street it collided with a patrol car, causing damage, but no injuries to the officers.

The stolen car eventually stopped in Spencer Street, Cowandilla, and the driver ran off.

Police Dogs Judge and Axe tracked the suspect to the yard of a nearby residential premises.

The passenger was also apprehended by police about 15 minutes later in nearby Turner Street, Cowandilla.

The alleged driver, a 20-year-old Melrose Park man, was arrested and charged with illegal use, drive in a manger dangerous to the public, excessive speed and fail to stop after an accident. He was bailed to appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on 23 March.

His 15-year-old passenger, a Port Lincoln boy, was arrested and charged with illegal use. He was bailed to appear in the Port Adelaide Youth Court at a later date.

The stolen Volvo was seized by police for forensic examination. It was reported stolen from a West Croydon address on 12 February.
