A man has been charged and police officers injured following an alleged pursuit in Wollongong at the weekend.
About 1.40am Sunday (8 December 2019) officers from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped a black Holden Commodore on Fisher Street, West Wollongong.
Police requested the drivers details and following inquiries discovered the driver had provided false information.
As officers attempted to arrest the man he allegedly placed his keys into the ignition preparing to flee.
Police will allege the man rammed the Commodore into the police car, which sustained significant damage.
Officers involved suffered minor injuries to their backs, legs and wrists as a result of the collision.
A pursuit was engaged but terminated shortly after for safety reasons.
Following inquiries, officers attached to the Southern Region Enforcement Squad located the 48-year-old man at a motor inn in Brownsville about 11.40am yesterday (Tuesday 10 December 2019).
As officers attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly headbutted a male police officer and knocked him unconscious.
The officer regained consciousness and was taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment. He sustained lacerations to his head as a result of the alleged assault.
As the man was placed in the caged police truck, he kicked the back window and sustained minor injuries as a result.
He was placed in a second police car before being taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with assault police (actual bodily harm), malicious damage and resist/hinder officer, intimidate police, police pursuit, use weapon to avoid apprehension, drive manner dangerous and other traffic related charges.
The man was refused bail and is expected to face Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 11 December 2019).
