Police charge driver after failing to stop at fatal crash near Griffith

A disqualified driver has been charged after allegedly failing to stop following a fatal crash in the state's south west yesterday.

Just before 4pm (Wednesday 14 July 2021), a Mitsubishi Outlander, travelling north, and an Iveco tabletop towing a caravan, travelling south, have collided on Barellan Road, Barellan, about 50km east of Griffith.

The driver of the Iveco allegedly failed to stop and render assistance, leaving the scene.

Emergency services attended and treated the Mitsubishi driver, a 33-year-old man; however, he was unable to revived and died at the scene.

His 92-year-old passenger was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital suffering minor injuries.

Officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District established a crime scene and specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attended to assist

Following inquiries, officers attended a Barellan property about 5.15pm and arrested a 52-year-old man.

He was taken to Griffith Hospital where he underwent mandatory testing before being transferred to Griffith Police Station.

The man was charged drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, two counts of fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, not give particulars to other driver and alter concentration alcohol in blood before sampled.

The man was refused bail and is expected to appear in Griffith Local Court today (Thursday 15 July 2021).
