Police charge driver after fatal crash at Wollongong

A bus driver has been charged following an investigation into a fatal crash in the Illawarra region yesterday.

About 10am (Monday 27 June 2022), emergency services were called to Crown Street, near the intersection of Corrimal Street, Wollongong, after reports a pedestrian had been hit by a bus.

The pedestrian – a 68-year-old woman – was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Wollongong Hospital, however she died a short time later.

Officers attached to Wollongong Police District attended and established a crime scene.

The bus driver was uninjured and taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.

Following inquiries, a 32-year-old man was arrested at Wollongong Police Station about 4pm (Monday 27 June 2022), and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death.

He was granted conditional bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 12 July 2022.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.
