Police charge five after cannabis plants worth over $3.7 million seized - Artarmon

Five men have been charged and cannabis plants worth more than $3.7 million seized following investigations into the cultivation and supply of cannabis in Sydney's North.

Earlier this month, officers from the Northern Beaches and North Shore Police Area Commands established Strike Force Echunga and commenced a joint investigation into the cultivation and supply of cannabis in the Artarmon area.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives executed search warrants at three factories in Artarmon at Hotham Parade, McLachlan Avenue and George Place, about 7.30am yesterday (Tuesday 17 December 2019).

During the search, investigators seized about 1,206 cannabis plants, with an estimated potential street value of more than $3.7 million, and about 58kg of dried cannabis leaf, with an estimated potential street value of $382,000 and $46,000 in cash.

Large sophisticated hydroponic tent set-ups were located and dismantled in each factory.

Five men were arrested across the locations; three – aged 45, 62 and 55 – were taken to Chatswood Police Station and two – aged 25 and 60 – were taken to Manly Police Station.

The 45-year-old man was charged with three counts of cultivate prohibited plant (large commercial quantity), participate criminal group, three counts of found on/entering/leaving drug premises, two counts of supply cannabis and recklessly deal with proceeds of crime.

The 55-year-old was charged with two counts of cultivate prohibited plant (large commercial quantity), participate criminal group, two counts of found on/entering/leaving drug premises and supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity).

The 62-year-old was charged with three counts of cultivate prohibited plant (large commercial quantity), participate criminal group, supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity), three counts of found on/entering/leaving drug premises, supply cannabis and two counts of owner/occupier knowingly allow use as drug premises.

The two other men, aged 25 and 60, were charged with cultivate prohibited plant (large commercial quantity), found on/entering/leaving drug premises and participate criminal group.

All five men were refused bail, with the 25-year-old and 60-year-old to appear before Manly Local Court, and the other three before Hornsby Local Court today (Wednesday 18 December 2019).
