Police charge man after aggravated break & enter - Balmain

A man will appear in court today after being charged with the aggravated break and enter of a home in Balmain earlier this week.

About 3.45am on Monday 10 June 2019, emergency services were called to Llewellyn Street after reports an intruder had forced entry through the glass front door of the home.

The male occupant of the residence was woken by the noise and walked from a bedroom and saw the man.

He observed the intruder was erratic and contacted police.

After arming himself with knives from the kitchen, the intruder barricaded himself in a bedroom of the home.

The resident was able to safely move his family to another area of the home.

Officers from Leichhardt Police Area Command attended and established a perimeter around the premises.

As police attempted to negotiate with the intruder the resident and his family were removed from the home.

The man was arrested without incident about 5.20am and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment to a laceration on his arm and for assessment.

During Thursday 13 June 2019, a 33-year-old man was arrested at the hospital and conveyed to Burwood Police Station.

He was later charged with aggravated break, enter and commit serious indictable offence, being armed with intent to commit indictable offence, destroy or damage property and common assault (x 4).

The man was refused bail to appear at Burwood Local Court today (Friday 14 June 2019).
