Police charge man after Footscray cemetery grave sites disturbed

A man has been charged following an investigation into the disturbance of two grave sites in Footscray in late January.

Detectives from Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit arrested the 40-year-old from Spotswood earlier today.

It is alleged partial human remains were stolen from mausoleums in two separate incidents at the Geelong Road cemetery between Thursday 27 January and Tuesday 1 February.

The man has been charged with six offences including two counts each of removal of body parts from the corpse of a human being, exhume or removal of human remains from place of interment and criminal damage.

Local detectives have been working tirelessly and with extreme sensitivity to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident.

The man will appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 17 August.
