A man has been charged following a fire in Sydney's inner east earlier this week.
About 12.50am on Wednesday 25 March 2026, emergency services were called to the garage of a unit block on Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills, after reports of a fire.
NSW Fire and Rescue extinguished the blaze and two vehicles were destroyed.
The surrounding properties were evacuated and there were no reports of injuries.
Officers attached to Surry Hills Police Area Command established a crime scene, and an investigation commenced into the circumstance surrounding the fire.
Following inquiries, about 2pm yesterday (Friday 27 March 2026), police arrested a 36-year-old man at an address on Stoney Creek Road, Beverly Hills.
He was taken to Kogarah Police Station where he was charged with damage property by fire or explosion less than or equal to $2000 and break and enter house destroy property more than $60,000.
The man was refused bail to appear at Local Bail Division – Court 7 today (Saturday 28 March 2026).
