A man has been charged after he failed to stop for police while driving a stolen vehicle in Melbourne's west yesterday afternoon.

A woman called Triple Zero (000) after observing her red Subaru Impreza parked at a car wash on Barnes Road in Melton around 3pm on Monday, 7 February.

The vehicle was allegedly stolen from an address in Weir Views on Sunday night.

Police attended the car wash and set up stop sticks at the entrance, however the driver of the stolen Impreza allegedly reversed at speed and drove across the gutter onto the road, narrowly missing police and civilian vehicles.

A 29-year-old Mount Clear man was arrested without incident shortly after.

He was interviewed by detectives and charged with a number of theft, driving and drug offences.

The man was remanded to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates' Court today.
