Police charge man after Mentone fires

Police have charged a man following two fires in Mentone this morning.

Witnesses called Triple 0 after seeing a man light a fire at a vacant block on Mentone Parade about 8.15am.

Police responded and the man allegedly fled on foot.

He was arrested a short time later in nearby Station Street after a second property was allegedly set alight about 8.25am.

The property was a vacant house and sustained moderate damage.

The 47-year-old Cheltenham man has been charged with burglary, criminal damage and criminal damage by fire.

He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 29 December.
